CII Goa asks state to intervene in migrant workers’ exodus #FinanceIndia #StockMarketNEWS #Business
Panaji: With looming prospects of large scale departure of migrant workers from the state, CII- Goa on Monday at a special virtual meeting with Jennifer Monserrate, Minister for Labour and Employment, expressed concern over the movement of labour force in the coming months.

Pointing out the ill effect of the exodus on the functioning of local industry, the industry representative body said that, the state must mitigate the shortage with necessary amendments in the Act.

Members also expressed the difficulty and constrain faced by companies in complying with the mandating payment of wages while battling the situation of survival. They sought government help on the subject and added that, given industry is already reeling, with uncertainty and lack of cash flow “the revision of DA rates in wages be deferred at the moment, and not be enforced from April 1 2020.

Members of the industry body added that, they would take up separately with the government the need for extension in number of working hours in factories and that the extra hours should be proportionately paid and should not be treated as overtime.

During the online meeting with the labour minister, CII also presented the problems faced by the tourism and hotel industry and said that, tourism is in for a long haul with little or no hope of income seen for the next six-eight months.

The industry body sought local government intervention as regards payment of wages by the employer to the employees as this was not sustainable by law and neither sustainable under Disaster Management Act or Epidemic Diseases Act.

The virtual meeting was between the Labour Minister and Blaise Costabir, chairman, CII- Goa, Shrinivas V Dempo, past chairman, CII Western Region along with over 30 members of the industry body.
